I wanted to reach out to you all about an upcoming event in Thomasville that will shed a bit of light on dyslexia and how it impacts our students. I am the co-founder of the Dyslexia Network of Southwest Georgia. As most of you know, I am also a teacher and a parent of a student with dyslexia. October has been designated by Gov. Deal as dyslexia awareness month so we want to have a large impact in the coming weeks.
Though it is thought as many as 20% of students are impacted by dyslexia, teachers often do not have the tools they need to see or help those students. As a parent, I know the frustration and relief that comes with a diagnosis. Scholars has an amazing program to reach this group of students and that makes my heart so happy!!
In conjunction with the International Dyslexia Association, Thomas County Schools is hosting a presentation of The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia. The current and past presidents of the International Dyslexia Association, GA branch, will be here to answer questions. I encourage you to send this information to your teachers and parents. It isn't a TC event, but a regional event ... I mean if any students are struggling, it impacts our entire community!
So I invite you to share this flyer with your staff and "like" our Facebook page. I am also expecting brochures any day now for the upcoming IDA conference in Atlanta. I will drop a few off at your schools when I get them. We have another event in the works for October in conjunction with the founders of www.understood.org. I will send that information soon.
Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for events. I hope you see each of you soon.
